When it comes to streamlining the loading and unloading of goods, a dock plate can make all the difference. However, not every facility requires one, nor does every job need the same type.

So, when do you need a dock plate?

Whether you’re handling hand trolleys, pallet trucks or other light-wheeled equipment, this guide will help you understand where dock plates are most effective and when they’re the best solution for your loading dock needs.

What is a Dock Plate?

A dock plate is a flat, metal bridge used to span the gap between a loading dock and a vehicle. Typically made from aluminium, these are designed for lighter equipment and non-motorised traffic, such as hand trucks, trolleys or manual pallet jacks.

Unlike dock boards, dock plates do not have raised safety curbs, which makes them ideal for lightweight applications where speed and simplicity are more important than heavy-duty load capacity.

When Should You Use a Dock Plate?

  1. You’re Handling Light Equipment or Foot Traffic

Dock plates are designed for non-powered handling equipment. If your operations involve hand trolleys, sack trucks or manual pallet trucks, this is the safest and most efficient way to bridge gaps at your loading dock.

  1. Your Load Weights Are Moderate

For heavier vehicles like forklifts, you’ll need a dock board. But if your loads are relatively light, generally below 700kg, depending on the plate specification, a dock plate is a practical and cost-effective option.

  1. You Need Portability

Dock plates are lightweight and easy to reposition, making them ideal for temporary loading areas, multiple bay use, or sites where flexibility is key.

  1. You’re Operating in Low-Risk Environments

Because dock plates don’t have side curbs, they’re best suited to low-risk environments where the risk of equipment veering off the edge is minimal.

When Not to Use a Dock Plate

If you’re working with forklifts or powered pallet trucks or handling particularly heavy goods, a dock board is a safer and more appropriate solution.

Likewise, if your site has a steep incline between the vehicle and the dock, or if you’re operating in environments with high health and safety risk, a dock board or other loading dock equipment may be better suited.
