Dock Plate Overview
Dockplates provide an efficient and low cost way of loading and unloading vehicles from a loading dock, typically by means of pallet trucks, sack trucks, roll cages and pedestrian access.
A dockplate is a stand-alone product, requiring no installation, and therefore causes no disruption to the existing dock.
For heavier duty applications please see our range of Dockboards.
Dockplate Standard features:
- built-in treadplate antislip finish
- manufactured from high tensile aluminium (beware of cheap, lower grade imitations)
- crowned and bevelled for smooth operation
- loop type handles for easy movement
- one pair of locking legs to locate between vehicle and loading dock, to prevent movement
- Bend point 230mm in from the end of the plate; for compliance with BS EN 1398:2009 which calls for a minimum of 100mm engagement onto the vehicle bed.
- When used to access vehicles below dock height, the majority of the plate must be positioned inside the vehicle.
We recommend that dock plates under 40kg are handled by two people minimum, beyond this, lifting facilities (such as our optional FTH-1) should be used.
Dock plate options:
- fork truck lifting handles (FTH-1) – recommended for dock plate models marked * due to the weight.
- side curbs with castors (SCC-2) for easy movement – standard loop handles removed.
- additional set of fixed locking legs (FSL-1) for applications where an excessive

Selecting the right Dockplate for your application:
- Step 1: Establish the maximum height differential between vehicle floor level and dock. Note: The maximum recommended height differential is the maximum differential possible with the ramp at 7° (12.5%), the maximum possible is the absolute maximum the ramp will achieve whilst maintaining secure location/ positioning in the vehicle. Some equipment may require gradients less that 7 degrees for example manual or certain types of powered pallet trucks. Equipment with low underclearances may also require lower gradients or bespoke boards. If the height differential required is greater than a Dockplate can achieve, it can be paired with a Dockplate Ramp.
- Step 2: Select a Dockplate width. What are you using it for? What width is required? In accordance with BS EN 1398:2009, the minimum width should be 700mm wider than the track width of the equipment being used, unless restricted by your loading facilities and measures are taken to prevent operator and equipment from falling.
- Step 3: Determine the maximum total load. What are you using it for? What load will it carry? This determines whether a Dockplate or a Dockboard would be best for you.
- Extras: Establish if any extra are required:
- Fork Truck Lifting Handles (FTH-1), recommended for moving Dockplates weighing 40Kg or more.
- Side Curbs with Castor for easy movement (SCC-2), allow the plate to be lifted onto its side and wheeled for positioning.
- Fixed Span Locking Legs (FSL-1), recommended if the gap between the vehicle and loading dock is greater than 150mm.
